Mail-order laboratory test - Helicobacter

The Helicobacter pylori test involves the laboratory-based quantitative detection of antigens specific to this bacterium in a stool sample. It is an effective and accurate method used for both diagnosing infections and monitoring the effectiveness of treatment.

Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that, by colonizing the stomach and duodenum, causes inflammation of the mucous membrane and contributes to the development of various gastrointestinal conditions, including gastric and duodenal ulcers, acid reflux, heartburn, and even gastric cancer. In most cases, the infection is asymptomatic, and only about 10% of infected individuals experience symptoms.

The diagnostic process uses the ELISA immunoenzymatic test, which quantitatively detects antigens. This examination is recommended by the Polish Society of Gastroenterology.

Indications for testing:

• diarrhea,
• nausea,
• bloating,
• indigestion,
• abdominal pain,
• feeling of fullness after eating,
• acidic belching and heartburn.

Sample collection instructions:

The test result may be unreliable if the sample is collected during treatment with antibiotics, antifungal medications or supplements, antipyretics, or deworming agents. The test should be performed at least 2 weeks after the end of such treatment. It is also recommended to maintain a regular diet prior to testing, without making major dietary changes.

Before collecting the stool sample, the bladder should be completely emptied. The stool must not come into contact with water, urine, or cleaning agents.

Sample collection:

• Open a sterile stool container purchased from a pharmacy.
• Use the plastic spatula to collect samples from several areas of the same bowel movement. Fill the container to no more than ¼ of its capacity.
• Tightly close the container and deliver it to the laboratory as soon as possible.
• Until delivery, store the sample in a cool place at a temperature of 2–8°C.
